ABOUT
IMG_1505.jpg

Music has always been a part of my life.   As a small child, I remember rocking out to records in my bedroom, and running around recording everything imaginable with my little cassette tape recorder.  I began playing instruments in the 1st grade, and was a band geek throughout my school career.  I eventually picked up the guitar when I was 12 years old, and began playing in bands and recording song ideas on my Foxtex 4-track recorder.  Finally, in 1997, I was bitten by the production bug when my band recorded with engineer Mike Zirkel (Garbage, Death Cab For Cutie) at Butch Vig’s Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin…an experience that would change my life forever and set me on a course which has held to this day.

Along the way I’ve had the privilege of being taught by some of the best in the industry, including Michael James (New Radicals, Janes Addiction, Hole, L7), Michael Rosen (Death Angel, Rancid, Testament), and Bryan Matheson (The Pacific Mozart Ensemble, owner of Skyline Studios).  These producers and engineers provided me the insight into what it takes to make a great sounding record and gave me the foundation to record and mix audio on a professional level.  For the past 14 years I have also worked as an audio software engineer for Digidesign/Avid and Apple, giving me the technical proficiency and depth of knowledge to be efficient and effective in today’s modern digital recording world.  I’m currently a full-time freelance mix/recording engineer and music producer, working out of Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco, Skyline Studios in Oakland, as well as my own home studio in SF.  I have been fortunate enough to work with some amazing artists over the years, including Bay Area metal legends Machine Head, Social Studies, The Sam Chase, Down and Outlaws, Amongst Thieves, X-Method, as well as up and coming local artists such as SAICS and Modyst.

MIXING

One of my favorite parts of the recording process is mixing.  I really enjoy taking the elements that are there and elevating the production to another level.  I love giving the mix the punch, depth, and width that captivates the listener, and putting that final sheen on the tracks to make it sound like a finished record.  My process involves a “hybrid” approach of analog and digital technologies.  I have a 16 channel Neve summing mixer that I stem all audio through, followed by some analog EQ and compression to add the finishing touches on the way back into the computer.  I also have an arsenal of outboard gear that I use to sweeten the individual tracks along the way.  When we reach the point in the process where I need your feedback, I can provide you a realtime stream of my mix session, allowing you to comment on the progress of the mix and hear your revisions immediately, reducing the back and forth of emailing mixes for review.

MUSIC PRODUCTION

My decades of experience as a musician give me a lot of experience to draw on when it comes to writing and arranging a song.  I have a keen ear for melodies and harmonies, and love to come up with new and unique parts to keep the listener engaged and wanting more.  I am versed in many different styles of music (Rock, Metal, Alternative, and Hip Hop), and enjoy structuring songs to have the maximum emotional impact by layering instrumentation to create a lush and captivating soundscape that takes the listener on a journey through into another world.  I’m not here to dictate how things should sound…that part is up to artist.  I’m here to guide the artist along the path and help them to realize the full potential in their art.  The song is the master, and we are only here to serve it.

RECORDING

Being in the room for the birth of a song has to be one of the most rewarding experiences in the world of music.  Witnessing the inspiration and capturing the magic as it happens is a privilege that not many people get to take part in.  I love being a part of this process, and will do all that I can to make sure that the technical side of things doesn’t get in the way of the creative flow.  I do most of my basic tracking at a few studios here in the San Francisco Bay Area (Wally’s Hyde Out, Hyde Street Studios, and Skyline Studios), and I have a great studio at home where a lot of the overdubbing takes place.  Having been a recording musician over the years, I understand what it’s like to be on the other side of the glass, and do my best to provide artists with a comfortable environment to be creative in.   I am also open to working at your studio of choice, and will travel to wherever is desired.

Artists all have different needs and different budgets.   I work on a sliding scale depending on the needs of the project.  I try to understand the requirements of the project and work with the artist to come up with a deal that makes everyone happy.  That being said, my typical rates are as follows:

Mixing: $250/song for quick mix, $500/song for more complex arrangements

Music Production: $500/song

Recording: $50/hr (plus studio rental if applicable)
